Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association (KWCA) is partnering with Pwani Ecosystem Conservancies Foundation (PECFO) in implementing a project funded by Darwin Initiative on Scaling-up equitable governance of protected and conserved areas (SEGA) whose objective is to substantially scale-up the use of SAGE tool for achieving more equitable governance in the management and conservation of Golini-Mwaluganje Community Conservancy ensuring improved conservation and social outcomes as part of the global effort to meet the Global Biodiversity Framework’s 30×30 target.

Through the lead facilitator, Madam Joice Peshu from KWCA, the project kicked off by conducting an introductory meeting with the conservancy board and staffs, and the PECFO secretariat. Other activities in the preparation phase were the actors/stakeholders’ analysis, site profile, and planning of the assessment.

Ms. Peshu, took the assistant facilitators and note takers through a one-day robust training on how to conduct the assessment. This was followed by the assessment at the Golini-Mwaluganje Conservancy main gate on the 21st of November 2024 where six actor groups comprised of the community men, women, youth, conservancy board, conservancy staffs (management), and the partners were successfully assessed.

The synthesis workshop took place on the 22nd November 2024 at Kwale Golden Hotel where all the actors assessed attended. Chaired by Ms. Peshu, different actor groups shared their findings and discuss differences of opinion on key issues and proposed actions they could take to address these issues and narrow their differences of opinion. It was a success.

After the successful planning and assessment, we awaits for the final report which will be ready by mid-December so that planning phase could kick off. The report will reveal the governance and equity gaps of the conservancy and proposes actions to address the gaps. KWCA through PECFO will lead the implementation of the project for the next 4 years for a better conservation and social outcomes through effective governance and equity.
