International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem

On July 26, 2024, the PECFO team joined the rest of the world to celebrate the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. This is a day when the world reflects on the importance of mangroves and how best they can be conserved for sustainability. Mangroves are in danger.

The mangrove ecosystem acts as a shy guardian of the coast and the creatures it harbors. This amazing ecosystem is absolutely essential for the survival of coastal living creatures. It is one of the most underappreciated ecosystems in the ocean world, as it offers numerous essential services.

According to IUCN, 50% of the world’s mangrove ecosystems are at risk of collapse due to threats such as deforestation and pollution. This means that human activities are the main threats to the existence of mangroves.

Nevertheless, mangrove conservation and restoration have been neglected for a long time, but in recent years, communities and conservationists have become considerate. Local communities and stakeholders like KMFRI and other international organizations have played a crucial role in creating awareness and managing mangrove resources. These initiatives are important because mangroves are vulnerable to deforestation, pollution, and overexploitation for various uses.

We should celebrate their existence, inform other people about them, and continue working toward their preservation. In doing so, we protect not only our environment but also the economic well-being of the people living on the Kenyan coast.
