We are thrilled to share that Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary successfully held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday, 24th January 2026, at the Cultural Amphitheatre in Kwale.

The AGM brought together over 150 conservancy members, including women and youth, providing an inclusive platform for participation and decision-making. The meeting was graced by the Kwale County Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo, alongside the CECM for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Saumu Beja Mahaja, other county government officials, and partners, including Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Foundation, Pwani Ecosystem Conservancies Foundation, and MMS Advocates.

The Deputy Governor reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to supporting the Sanctuary by supporting streamlining governance, strengthening partnerships and investments, promoting community-led conservation, and advocating for effective and timely compensation for Human–Wildlife Conflict victims by KWS.

A major milestone of the AGM was the election of a new Board of Trustees under the Sanctuary’s new Constitution, which replaces the first constitution adopted in 1994. Presided over by Mr. Abdallah Chikophe of IEBC, the elections were conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.

The newly elected 9-member Board reflects the principles of equity and good governance, with representation across locations, men, women, and youth.

This marks the beginning of a promising new chapter for Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary.
